by Mark Vowels, DirectorThis past summer, I spent a week in Cuba. I was part of a team that was teaching men and women to communicate the Bible’s message clearly and effectively. It’s not that they weren’t already doing that pretty well. In fact, the church is growing in Cuba faster than anywhere else I know in this hemisphere. We visited church after church that is overflowing with new converts and new churches are springing up faster than leaders can be prepared to serve them. That’s in part why we were there.
I was overwhelmed with the fact that, despite the absence of missionaries or much influence from believers in other countries, God was clearly at work. I was reminded that Jesus is fulfilling His promise to build His Church. In Cuba. In China. In Iran. In Greenville. God is no less at work on our little corner of the globe known as Bob Jones University. We’re one school among many. One group of Christians in God’s worldwide Church. But God is at work here too. In students. In faculty. In all of us. He is at work in Accounting majors, Criminal Justice majors, Nursing majors, Education majors, Exercise Science majors, and Bible majors. He is at work in all of us, to shape us into men and women, filled with His Spirit, motivated by His gospel, who can carry the hope of Life to a broken world. To Cuba. To China. To Iran. To Greenville. The Center for Global Opportunities was formed to connect the dots. It links what God is doing around the world with what God is doing at BJU. We were made to be disciples of Jesus Christ. We were saved to make disciples for Jesus Christ. The CGO helps us fulfill that purpose, using every major, every skill, and every passion to make a difference here in Greenville. And we connect people with ways to do that around the world. This is not about the Center for Global Opportunities. It’s not about BJU. It’s not about you. It’s about our glorious and compelling Jesus. He is at work in many places. He is at work in you. We just connect the dots.
